Richard (Tug) Wilson The Manitoba Karate
Association (MKA) was founded in 1969 by Mr. Richard (Tug)
Wilson and registered in March, 1974. Mr. Wilson retired
from teaching martial arts in 1977 with the ranks of 4th Dan
in both Karate and Judo.
- Born in Glasgow,
Scotland. Tug commenced Judo training in 1951 at the
London Judo Society after a youthful career in boxing
and rugby. He became regular member of the Metropolitan
Police Judo Team.
- Further studied at the
main European Dojos while serving with the RCAF in
Germany for four years.
- Came to Winnipeg in
1960 and opened the Winnipeg Judo Club in 1961.
- Met Masami Tsuroka in
1962 and became one of his karate students that year.
- August 1963 added
Karate to the Winnipeg Judo Club ad became the first
Karate School in Manitoba followed in 1964 by Jerry
Marr’s Midwest Karate.
- Tug was a founding
member of the National Karate Association in 1965 and
founded the Manitoba Karate
Association (now known as Karate Manitoba) in 1969.
- Trained under
Katouyoshi Takata 9th Dan at its Kodokan
(World Judo Headquarters) and thanks to his influence
was able to train at several of the more promised karate
dojos in Tokyo.
- Promoted to 4th
Dan in Judo in 1971 and 4th Dan in Chito-ryu
Karate in 1974.

Retired from Martial Arts in 1977 after a successful
career as competitor, coach and manager to reenter the
field of law enforcement.
- Still
remains involved in the martials art world and often
attends tournaments.

Sensei Jerry Marr Jerry Marr has
over 40 years experience in Karate, and holds the rank of
7th Dan, JKA. In 1964 he began studying under Sensei Fusaro,
7th Dan of Minneapolis. Prior to that, in 1961, he received
his 1st. Dan in Judo.

Don McKenzie Don has studied Karate
under the instruction of Sensei Marr for over 30 years. In
1994 he was promoted to Yondan by Sensei Nishiyama. Don has
represented Manitoba on many occasions at a National Level;
either as a team member, team coach or as an official. Some
of Don's accomplishments since becoming a black belt are:

Don deGrow
Don deGrow's coaching experience and expertise continues to
contribute to the team as he co-instructs with Sensei
McKenzie. DeGrow received his Sandan in 2000 from Master
Nishiyama. He also received his Yondan from Master Katsumata
in 2006.

Robert Stegmaier Robert Stegmaier began his study of Karate in 1976, under
the teaching of Sensei Marr. In 1983 he obtained the level
of Shodan from Sensei Fusaro; his Yondan from Master
Nishiyama in 2000. In the past 24 years, Robert has
contributed to Karate in many aspects. His other

Leon Flannigan & Wendy Flannigan
Leon, Wendy and Scott Flannigan are the Chief Instructors
for this area. Leon, a Sandan, teaches in Rapid City and
Rivers. Wendy, a Nidan, teaches at the main dojo in Brandon.
Scott, a Sandan, teaches in Shilo, Carberry, Souris,
Minnedosa, and Neepawa . The Flannigans have been in Karate
in the Brandon region since 1984 and in 1990 they started
their own dojo. The Western Manitoba area has increased from
1 dojo to 8 dojos and continues to grow.

Angelo Mendoza
ANGELO MENDOZA Sensei has over 33 year of experience in
Karate and holds the rank of 6th Dan. In 2009, Sensei
Mendoza hosted the Golden Girl Open, the 1st all Women’s
Martial Arts Open in the province of Manitoba. In July 2007
Sensei Mendoza was awarded a special training session with
Soke Kenei Mabuni, son of the founder of Shito Ryu, Osaka,
Japan.
